Orla Brady in a scene from “The South Westerlies.”Acorn |
This six-episode Irish import is about a woman who returns to her small hometown, secretly on a mission from a Norwegian energy company that wants to build a wind farm there. But this isn’t a bleak manipulation drama — more like a quirky, “Northern Exposure”-style, “we do things our own lovable way here” dramedy, with peppy personal conflict and exceptional sweaters. There aren’t a ton of surprises along the way, but it’s so endearing. If you understand the impulse to watch terrible Hallmark movies but simply cannot abide their schlock, watch this.

Kate Mara in a scene from “A Teacher.”Chris Large/FX |
When to watch: Starting Tuesday, on FX on Hulu.
“A Teacher” is adapted from a 2013 movie with the same title and premise: A female high school teacher has a predatory sexual relationship with a male student. The mini-series is chilly and lean, and because its 10 episodes are only a half-hour each, the pace sometimes recreates the disorientation that is part of abusive grooming — wait, it was just a second ago that everything was fine. The first three episodes will be available starting Tuesday, with the rest coming out weekly.
