I want a show I can watch in one sitting

Mamoudou Athie, center, in a scene from “Oh Jerome, No.”FXX |
When to watch: Now, on Hulu.
The lovely, unusual comedic tale of romance “Oh Jerome, No” aired as segments on the FXX series “Cake,” but now it’s streaming on Hulu on its own two feet. The eight episodes are each about 12 minutes long, but they’re more assured and fully imagined than plenty of longer shows.
Mamoudou Athie stars as Jerome, who worries that he’s too sensitive and that it’s ruining his love life. We see him through some tough dates and odd mismatches, and he gets himself into such a funk that even the A.T.M. asks, “What’s your problem?” “Mopey dude unlucky in love” is not on its face enticing, but “Jerome” has the absurdist tendencies of “Broad City” and the bitter cleverness of “Man Seeking Woman.” God bless a show in which there’s a dog named Party Time.
Jerome’s anxieties and self-sabotage are familiar, but the show’s imaginative and dexterous ways of describing and embodying them are full of weird little surprises, moments that don’t go where you would think. Written and directed by Teddy Blanks and Alex Karpovsky, the series is insightful and funny, its tone landing in that spot between breezy and melancholy that feels right for autumn in general and exactly right for this autumn in particular. If you liked “Russian Doll,” watch this.
